VDV Recommendation 550 is intended for the employees of transport companies who are in charge of the overhead contact line systems. Moreover, it can be used as a guide for the planning and erection of overhead contact line systems by companies and engineering firms active in this field. This VDV Recommendation is based on the European standards EN 50119 and EN 50122-1 and explains their practical realisation in respect overhead contact line systems.

It can also be applied to overhead contact line systems for trolleybuses.

Pointers on the selection of overhead contact line poles and their foundations are not included in this Recommendation, but in VDV Recommendation 551 “Overhead Contact Line Poles and Pole Foundations”.
